This new text book by Urs Birchler and Monika Butler is an introduction to the study of bjtler information affects economic relations.
The authors provide a narrative treatment of the more formal concepts of Information Economics, using easy to understand and lively illustrations from film and literature and nutshell examples.
The book first covers the economics of information in a ‘man versus nature’ context, explaining basic concepts like rational updating or the value of information. Then in a ‘man versus man’ setting, Birchler and Butler describe strategic issues in the use of information: It closes with a ‘man versus himself’ perspective, focusing on information management within the individual.
Birchler and Buetler have served up something genuinely novel and substantive here. He has taught at the universities of Zurich, Berne, St. Would you like to tell us about a lower price? Along last 30 years the information, and its economy, emerged to gain relevance across the globe. The information is a strange economic good. This book helps to understand what the information is, where the value lives or how higher-value information meta information may impact one simple transaction.
The book covers the topic of the information and knowledge from several perspectives. I would remark the aspects of economy as an interesting economic good and its strategic plane though. The structure of the book is a trip with four stops or parts: I information as a good economic, II how the market aggregates information, III asymmetric information and IV the economics of self-knowledge.
Each part contains a set of chapters introducing the different topics progressively. The titles of those chapters are accurate and they describe the covered contents perfectly. I found useful a sequential reading though. The book reference past examples and previous comments. All chapters maintain the same structure looking for a balance between formal and non formal stuff.
The authors try to keep low the formalism though, so the book becomes good introduction stuff with the right pointers to mathematics if needed. About the problem sets, the authors keep an updated and free web where you can download solutions, teaching stuff, etc. I think this book is interesting. I liked the structure of the book and how the authors organized the chapters. It is easy ingormation read in order to get familiar with the different topics.
It is dconomics reading the introduction, main ideas and applications while keeping theory and problems sets to go depth only. While they try to illustrate with Alice and Bob good examples, they include some jargon and technical details related to real world cases.
Anyway, the book contains very ecnomics references and economicw so you are free to explore all that jargon and technical details though. In summary, I found this book very interesting. If you like the nature of the anr and its economic aspects, I guess you will enjoy with the narrative and academic style innformation this book. It contains good content and enough exercises to digest it. One person found this helpful. I’m working on a PhD in a closely related field and Infoemation used this book as a way to get a good summary of works for my background literature reviews.
The book covers complicated material in a wonderful, clear manner. When reading section where I was already familiar with the material I was able to get deeper insights. New material was easy to grasp. The references, eonomics, exercise etc. I’d highly recommend the book and suggest instructors to take a close look at this book if you are searching for a text – your students will appreciate it. I am impressed by the quality of writing of this material, but to be honest Economics appears more difficult now then when I got my degree in the early 70’s.
I will have to spend a fair amount of time to work through this book, but it appears it will be well worth the effort. This book is a peace of mass! A trashbin of information! Since the authors are native German speakers, they have written the book in German grammer rules such as in buler they use a sentence “thus is Very simple arguments cannot be understood as they recall them in German thinking.
Academically, they are out of scientific base. Notifications, the solutions, assumptions are mostly verbal and some derivations are mis solved. The book could be a nice paper to burn the stove!
